The BP brand is struggling as the company deals with the Gulf Coast disaster. Across America BP stations are seeking ways to rekindle business while others go to extra lengths to ensure their separation from the brand. In fact, a recent NPR story reveals a desire to return to the Amoco brand that extinguished soon after the merger with BP back in the 1990s.
Would a name change salvage the tarnished image? Or should BP fight on to rebuild consumer trust and loyalty?
RiechesBaird co-founder Ray Baird was brought in to discuss the merits of a re-branding effort during an interview on NPR’s All Things Considered. While he believes BP can regain a positive image over time it will take a great deal of transparency and honest communication with the public outside the Gulf Coast. For those within the region, time will play an even greater factor. It will likely take a generation or two before BP can realistically expect perceptions to transform.
